Using a dormant oil spray early in the spring will aid greatly in the prevention of problems with your fruit trees later in the season. This dormant spray should be applied before the leaves open in the spring. Read label directions carefully concerning temperatures at the time of application.

During the rest of the season, it is easiest to use a combination insecticide/fungicide such as Bonide’s Fruit Tree Spray. These can be applied with hose-end sprayers or a tank sprayer.

The first application of these chemicals should be when the flower buds show pink at the tips. Don’t spray when the trees are in bloom - you would kill the bees that aid in pollination. The second application should be just after 3/4 of the flower petals have dropped. The third application should be 7 - 10 days later. Two more sprays are needed over the next 2 - 3 weeks, at 7 - 10 day intervals.

Starting in early July, control apple maggots by hanging apple maggot traps in the trees.

Read chemical labels carefully and mix chemicals at the recommended rates. Follow the guidelines concerning spraying vs. days to harvest.
